Matt has worked as an archaeologist in Washington state since 2018 and has experience leading and participating in field projects that have included pedestrian and subsurface surveys, site testing, data recovery, and monitoring in a variety of urban, suburban, and rural settings across the state. He has managed projects under Section 106, SEPA, and EO 2102 regulatory frameworks for state and municipal agencies, as well as private entities. Matt joined the WillametteCRA team in late 2025.
Outside of the Pacific Northwest, Matt has conducted fieldwork and research in Bolivia, Ecuador, and Belize, and has taught university courses in archaeology and biological anthropology. Matt earned his Ph.D. in Anthropology in 2018 from the University of Texas at San Antonio, where his research focused on the structure of Inka colonialism and imperial frontier dynamics in the Department of Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
Matt’s areas of archaeological interest include Pacific Northwest archaeology, Andean archaeology, the archaeology of empires, GIS-based mapping and analysis, geoarchaeology, and faunal analysis. He is a member of the Society for American Archaeology and the Register of Professional Archaeologists.
When he’s not working, Matt enjoys gardening, traveling, hiking, and scuba diving.
